License verification for credentialing teams

The licensure step of a credentialing file, as an API call that produces evidence rather than a screenshot.

Evidence, not just an answer

A credentialing file has to survive an audit years after the check was made. That means the answer alone is not enough - you need to be able to show where it came from and when.

Every response carries a provenance block: the source board, the source URL, the date that file was published (data_as_of), and when we retrieved it. A verification can be filed as a record instead of taken on trust. How each source is obtained is documented on the methodology page.

What this is, and what it is not

This is a mirror of the boards' own published roster files. It is fast, batchable, and dated. It is not designated primary source verification under NCQA or Joint Commission standards, and we will not tell you otherwise - where your accreditor requires PSV, use a designated service or query the board directly. For nurses specifically, Nursys is primary-source-equivalent and free to institutions.

Where this earns its place is everything around that: the professions with no Nursys equivalent, continuous monitoring between credentialing cycles, and volume.

Beyond the license check

  • NPI cross-referencing. License numbers in the federal NPPES registry are self-reported and NPPES has no mechanism to check them against a board. We adjudicate the claim against the issuing board's file and report confirmed, name_mismatch or unresolved as distinct outcomes. We measured how often those disagree.
  • OIG/LEIE exclusion screening against the federal exclusion list, in the same call.
  • Monitors. Re-verification on a schedule with a signed webhook the day a status changes, so a lapse between cycles does not go unnoticed.
  • Signed certificates. Ed25519-signed, timestamped, and verifiable by a third party without an account.

Coverage, stated honestly

22,405,527 records across 31 states and 149 professions today. Where we hold no roster we return state_not_covered - a statement about our coverage, never a finding about the practitioner. Check the coverage matrix against your actual states before you plan around it.
