Looking for a Nursys alternative?
For verifying a nurse license, you probably should not be. Here is the honest version, and where an API like ours actually helps.
Use Nursys for nurses
Nursys is operated by NCSBN, and participating boards of nursing designate it primary source equivalent by written agreement. Nursys e-Notify is free to institutions, and it pushes license and discipline changes to you rather than waiting to be asked. If your verification need is nursing, that combination is difficult to beat and we will not pretend otherwise.
Participation is also close to universal - in practice every state board of nursing, plus DC and the US territories. The list is published by NCSBN and is the thing to check for your own states, since participation is theirs to change, not ours to promise.
Where the gap actually is
Nursys covers nursing. Most organizations that verify nurses also verify other people - and there is no Nursys for the rest. Physicians have FSMB; almost everyone else has 50 separate state boards publishing 50 different files in 50 different formats.
That is the gap we work in. Professions we cover in more than one state today:
Full list on the coverage page. Where we hold no roster, we say state_not_covered rather than guessing.
Honest comparison

| NPI cross-verification | No | Yes |
| OIG exclusion screening | No | Yes |
Looking for a Nursys API?
If what you need is Nursys data inside a system, that is a conversation with NCSBN, who operate it. We are not a Nursys API. We do not proxy, resell or mirror Nursys, and nothing we return is Nursys data. Our nurse coverage comes from state board roster files we ingest directly - a different source, with different properties, that we describe in the methodology.
That search usually means one of two things. If you want nurse licensure in an API, go to NCSBN. If you want every profession you credential answerable through one API, with nursing as one of them, that is the case below.
The realistic answer
Most teams should use both. Nursys for nurses, because it is authoritative and free to institutions. One API for the pharmacists, behavioral health clinicians, allied-health staff and licensed trades in the same workflow, so those do not stay manual while nursing is automated. If everyone you verify is a nurse, you do not need us, and we would rather say so than sell you something you will churn out of.
